Tottenham Hotspur are doing their best to aggressively build an entirely new team for Roberto De Zerbi after he helped them narrowly avoid relegation within weeks of being hired as their manager, as they have brought in Premier League veterans Andrew Robertson and Marcos Senesi for free and then spent 60 million euros on De Zerbi's personal favorite center back Jan Paul van Hecke.

But as Tottenham push hard to sign top midfielders Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali from other English clubs and continue to show interest in Manchester City winger Savinho, they are having to negotiate some pretty sizeable departures.

In addition to the almost guaranteed exit of club captain Cristian Romero, the young Luka Vuskovic is putting so much pressure on Spurs amidst interest from Brighton following the Van Hecke transfer that it seems as though the Croatian international is likely to leave without ever actually playing for Spurs in meaningful competition.

Another Tottenham star wants out

Now, though, Spurs have been handed an even worse potential transfer blow. Even though he should be focusing on the World Cup and is coming off a bad season, David Ornstein of The Athletic reports that Lucas Bergvall has straight up told Tottenham Hotspur that he wants to "seek new challenge elsewhere" this summer transfer window. There is reportedly intereset from around Europe, and interest even though Bergvall is under contract until 2031, Spurs are aware of his desire to leave for a fresh start.

It sounds like the Bergvall transfer is one that should happen this summer and be easily facilitated. Roberto De Zerbi does not come across like a guy who values players who want to leave without fighting for their spot, as that generally means those players are complainers who do not want to win. De Zerbi did not seem impressed with Bergvall as a player either, discarding him on the bench after his poor performances, instead leaning on the veteran players.

Still, Lucas Bergvall is a huge talent, and despite his consistency flaws and injury red flags, he is one of the most talented box to box midfielders in European football. Bergvall is a tremendous athlete who can change games and dominate in transition, and before his injury in 2024/25, the Swedish international was important to Tottenham Hotspur winning the Europa League.

Even though Bergvall had transfer interest from Chelsea, Aston Villa, and even Real Madrid during the season, few could have seen him actually handing in a transfer request already without even trying to impress Roberto De Zerbi in 2026/27.
