Tottenham’s disastrous season somehow looks even worse after this revelation

How can Spurs ensure they finish higher than 17th next season?

Tottenham Hotspur will remain a Premier League club in the end. On the final day, João Palhinha's goal on the cusp of half time was enough to beat Everton 1-0 at home; it was just as well they won, given that West Ham did manage to beat Leeds 3-0 less than six miles away.

That is now back-to-back 17th place finishes for Spurs. Surely the only way is up for Roberto De Zerbi. Well, we did say the same about Thomas Frank 12 months ago. This weekend saw Tottenham win a Premier League home game for only the third time all season. The Lilywhites previously picked up maximum points against Burnley on the opening day and then Brentford in early-December.

This is the joint-fewest home wins any side to avoid Premier League relegation has ever accumulated. Back in 2008/09, Hull City under Phil Brown also won only three home games, beating Fulham on opening weekend, West Ham and Middlesbrough, before finishing 17th and surviving on the final day by virtue of just one point. That all sounds familiar doesn't it?

In Premier League history, only 12 clubs have ever won four or fewer home matches in a single season and still manage to beat relegation. As mentioned, Spurs this season and Hull are the only duo to win as few as three and avoid the drop.

Of the ten who managed only four victories in front of their own supporters, six of them finished 17th, as the Lilywhites and the Tigers did. Tottenham themselves 32 years are one of the exceptions, ending up 15th under Osvaldo Ardiles, despite only four victories at White Hart Lane.

Norwich that season ended up 12th, despite four wins at Carrow Road, while four clubs won only four home matches in 2000/01, namely relegated trio Bradford, Coventry and Manchester City, as well as 14th-placed Middlesbrough. Surviving Burnley and Brighton won a miserly four home matches in 2020/21 although, given that the entire campaign was played behind-closed-doors, home advantage was rather nullified.

Fast forward to modern day, if Tottenham harbour hopes of returning to the European places in 12 months time, they simply must make home feel like home again. Astonishingly, since November 2024, the Lilywhites have claimed victory from only five of 33 Premier League home matches, losing 19 of them. This is frankly unacceptable and unsustainable, making this a priority for De Zerbi to fix.
