Tottenham fans will be relieved by the latest Fabrizio Romano transfer update involving their club. Spurs are in the midst of a busy summer that is likely to see them overhaul their squad following another Premier League campaign to forget.
Roberto De Zerbi is being handed signings aplenty to rejuvenate his squad, and we have already seen Marcos Senesi, Andy Robertson and Jan Paul van Hecke snapped up by the North London side.
Savinho appears to be another serious target, while others are also being linked with a move to Spurs. But one of the latest will not have gone down well with most.
Greenwood links
Spurs were linked with a move for Marseille forward Mason Greenwood this week, with L'Equipe crediting Spurs with interest in the former Manchester United star.
Greenwood scored 26 and assisted 11 during the season just gone, impressing in Ligue 1, but his form is only part of the story.
The forward was axed by United for his actions off the pitch, actions that led him to being accused of assault involving a former partner, and while charges were eventually dropped, there were audio recordings that were damning from a reputational standpoint, even if nothing was proven in court.
Greenwood is attempting to put the incident - or incidents - behind him with his performances on the pitch, but a return to the Premier League would be seen as hugely controversial, with United having come under serious criticism for the way they handled the situation initially.
Spurs distanced from links
According to Fabrizio Romano, Tottenham have no plans to sign Greenwood this summer, and that will be a relief to Spurs fans.
We can talk about what was proven and unproven, but putting all that aside, and even putting the ethical argument aside altogether, given there are legal connotations, the bottom line is that Greenwood would be a hugely controversial signing.
What Spurs cannot afford during this rebuild is to shroud themselves in controversy. This board is also on a mission to rebuild relationships with fans, and such a signing would also destroy any chance of that, given large sections of fans would likely be against the move.
The North London club need to stay firmly away from a Greenwood transfer, and it will be relief to many that they appear to be doing just that. A wise decision from those in charge at Tottenham.
