Tottenham Hotspur interested in goalscoring midfielder
By Tom Vinall
One of the biggest criticisms labelled at Spurs last season was their lack of goals from midfield, with an over reliance on Heung Min-Son and Richarlison to provide the goods. Considering Dejan Kulusevski spent most of last season on the wing, James Maddison, who missed months of action, was the clubs highest scoring midfielder in the Premier League last season - with four.
It's clear that this is something that Spurs want to improve on this season, with Maddison grabbing a couple already and Kulusevski scoring at Manchester United in his new midfield role. And it now seems, according to a report from TBR Football, that they are interested in signing a goal scoring midfielder from the continent.
They suggest that Ange Postecoglu's side, along with Aston Villa, are keeping 'a close eye' on 23-year old Viktoria Plzen midfielder Pavel Sulc. On the continent, Napoli, Atalanta, Marseille, Borussia Dortmund and Bayer Leverkusen are also interested in the Czech international.
Last season, Sulc scored a remarkable 18 goals in 29 games for the Czech side, with another five goals in ten league games so far this season. He added to this with a goal in the Europa League against Bundesliga side Frankfurt.
Sulc has taken this goalscoring form to the international stage, too, with a brace against Ukraine in the nations league last month.
As well as his five league goals, the midfielder has also created six big chances so far, showing he can add guile as well as goals.
His club manager, Miroslav Koubek, has admitted that the club would sell their star player if an acceptable offer came in. When speaking to publication Denik back in May, he said: "I’ve already said it once, in Plzen, departures are set up in such a way that they will only be dealt with in the case of an offer from the top five elite European leagues.
And if someone like that comes, I’ll shake Pavel’s hand and congratulate him.”
Whilst any player at any club is available for the right price, it is interesting to see a manager be open about it. They often bring out the tried and tested sayings such as "He is not for sale" "We are not looking to lose our best players" and so on. Let's see how this one develops.
