As has been rumored for weeks, Tottenham Hotspur are closing in on the potential sale of key fullback Djed Spence, who was one of the biggest stars of the 2026 World Cup, shining on either flank in the clutch for the England national team as they finished third at the World Cup for their best finish in decades.
Spence is still someone who can be important to Tottenham as the main backup at right back and left back, but it sounds like he wants out and may have even secretely submitted a transfer request to Spurs for the opportunity to get more minutes at a Champions League club, judging by the interest he has received since the World Cup.
Before the tournament, only Everton, a step down from Spurs, were loosely linked to the 26 year old. Now, Liverpool and Manchester United have been mentioned as suitors, while Serie A champions Inter Milan remain in the driver's seat for the potential Denzel Dumfries, who joined Real Madrid this summer, replacement.
Djed Spence is a lowball sale waiting to happen
If Tottenham Hotspur fans were upset with the news that Cristian Romero will likely go for just 40 million euros to Atletico Madrid after Inter were interested in him for the same price tag, then they will be even more profoundly upset with what is happening to Spence. Because Inter are in talks to sign Spence for a measly 30 million euros, which is well under the fee Tottenham fans were thinking the club were holding firm on for the experienced fullback.
Tottenham really should be under no pressure to sell Spence, and while Inter won their league and are a regular in the Champions League, it's debatable if they are even a bigger club than Spurs with how much attention is on the Premier League these days.
Regardless, Tottenham need Spence as a crucial depth piece at two different positions, and he is coming off a high value point in the World Cup. Selling Spence for an offer they could not reject financially is one thing, but selling him at less than market value to a potential future Champions League rival just sounds like an awful decision.
Spurs showed they can play up with the big boys by signing Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes for big money over the likes of Manchester City, Manchester United, and Arsenal, but they need to be able to keep their key players, too. Not taking a stand and giving in to this lowball Inter offer for Spence would be a huge step backwards for Spurs.
