Tottenham Hotspur left back Djed Spence had a World Cup for the ages, and even though England fell short in the end with a loss to Argentina in the semifinals that had poor coaching from Thomas Tuchel written all over it, the Spurs backup was one of the standout players of the tournament in his position - well, in both of them, left and right back, whatever Tuchel and the Three Lions called him for.
And if Tottenham sell Spence, who is garnering interest from two major Premier League suitors in Liverpool and Manchester United on top of existing interest from Serie A champions Inter Milan, then that is precisely what they are going to miss the most. That versatility to play either position at a reasonable levei in the Premier League will be something Tottenham are going to find hard to replace.
Great one on one defending aside, Spence's ability to play two talent scarce positions in the Premier League at a strong enough level to stymie top players at the World Cup is probably a huge reason why three of the biggest clubs in Europe are trying to steal the hard working defender from Tottenham Hotspur this summer.
Djed Spence is a defender Spurs won't want to lose
While Spurs can't do a whole lot if Spence wants to leave and thinks that, for example, Liverpool and Inter are bigger clubs with more opportunities for him to start - and current Champions League football to boot - it doesn't make a whole lot of sense for Spurs to willingly sell Djed Spence without a fight, unless a bidding war ensues and someone gives them an offer they can't refuse - like money between what Cristian Romero and Luka Vuskovic are set to cost this summer.
Tottenham brought in two real gems at the center back position in Jan Paul van Hecke and Marcos Senesi, and these guys are proven Premier League starters. But they have zero depth behind Pedro Porro at right back besides Spence, currently utiizing young center midfielder Archie Gray as a starting right back in the preseason friendly fixtures.
So Tottenham really don't have a lot of room to lose another defender on top of Romero and Vuskovic, and with his mentality and the true fighting spirit he showed for England at the World Cup, Spence also has more intangibles to give to Spurs than they do. But the biggest intangible of them all is versatility and thus tactical flexibility, and Spurs will miss that if he's gone.
