Thomas Frank has suggested that Cristian Romero will remain at Tottenham this summer, insisting the Argentine is "looking forward" to the new season.

Speculation was rife over Romero's future entering the summer, with the Argentinian saying earlier this year that he'd be open to a move to La Liga amid interest from Atletico Madrid. The Spaniards' intrigue was certainly legitimate, with Diego Simeone and Julian Alvarez among those to wax lyrical, but they've since ended their pursuit of the 27-year-old.

While Romero, when fit, is a centre-back who'd improve pretty much every starting XI in the world, there have been links to few clubs except Atleti. Their cooled interest was a big boost for Spurs, and many now expect Romero to remain in N17 this summer.

Thomas Frank suggests Cristian Romero will stay at Spurs this summer

There had been reports after his arrival that new manager Frank was keen to build his team around Romero at the heart of his defence, with the very best of the Argentine manifesting during our run to Europa League glory.

His close ties to former manager Ange Postecoglou raised fears that the 27-year-old would push for a move away. However, Romero has returned to Hotspur Way from holiday in a jubilant mood, and his latest Instagram post, laden with pre-season snaps captioned with a smiley emoji, seemed to capture his current contentment.

Frank has confirmed that Romero will share captaincy duties with Son Heung-min for Saturday's pre-season clash at Reading, and the new manager was asked about the speculation surrounding the defender's future.

In response, the Dane asserted (via The Spurs Express on X): โ€œHeโ€™s [Romero] definitely here and very committed. I know heโ€™s looking forward to the season.โ€

Music to our ears.

Nothing is guaranteed and the situation may well change, but, for now, we can look forward to 2025/26 with Romero working alongside Micky van de Ven. Who knows, perhaps we'll sign Illia Zabarnyi to form a formidable back three when necessary.

If Romero has bought in, the challenge for Spurs is getting the Argentine to the negotiating table. The 27-year-old has two years left on his contract, and Daniel Levy certainly won't want a valuable asset like Romero to enter next summer with his future unresolved. Tying the defender down for the long haul has to be a priority before the end of 2025.
