Cristian Romero aims another dig at Daniel Levy in Ange Postecoglou farewell message

Apologies, Mark, but you might think I'm writing in contradiction to your overriding ideal here. I mean, does the timing of a social media farewell post really matter... Is that a you-know-what I should be dedicating precious minutes towards for the sake of a blog post?

Well, when it's Cristian Romero waving off Ange Postecoglou, I think so.

Postecoglou's sacking was confirmed at the end of last week, and the tributes almost immediately followed. Some were simple, made up of 'thank yous' and 'wish you all the bests'. However, others were more significant. Their bond with the Australian clearly tighter.

James Maddison and Son Heung-min's were particularly heartfelt, with the respective prose of their messages strong enough to wonder whether Daniel Levy's decision would spark a revolt.

We've since heard Micky van de Ven label Ange's sacking as "strange" after he delivered a fitting tribute of his own. Still, there was one man who remained silent.

Romero's bond with the now-departed boss was said to be close, and their interactions while the club celebrated their first major trophy success in 17 years supplied plenty of evidence for that idea. Given the strength of their relationship, I find it hard to believe that his farewell message to Ange–well, the one he posted across his various social media accounts–wasn't delivered with clear intention.

Not even an hour before, Thomas Frank was confirmed by the club as Postecoglou's successor. Romero's had that tweet waiting in his drafts for days, you better believe it.

Now, it's not a dig at the new manager, but another shot taken towards the hierarchy, particularly Levy. Last December, Romero called out the higher-ups for a lack of investment, saying: "Hopefully they [the board] realise who the true responsible ones are and we move forward."

He was later forced to apologise, but Romero has made it abundantly clear that he's a lover of the club but resentful towards those pulling the strings from up above. He wants to win, and his respect for Ange undoubtedly stemmed from the Australian's desire to see the club succeed via the medium of silverware. Throughout his tenure, Levy has undeniably prioritised self-sufficiency over a strong push for glory, and Romero, a World Cup winner, has seen through the chairman's desire to achieve monetary utopia.

"From day one you paved the way despite the many obstacles that always existed and always will exist," Romero wrote.
