Tottenham Hotspur star right winger Dejan Kulusevski has been unable to play in a single game since the end of the 2024/25 season, as he suffered a knee injury that was intially supposed to be just a knock but then turned out to be a career threatening ailment.

The Swedish international only just started training fully with his teammates a month ago, but his road to recovery has been a long time in the making. After Spurs fans were worried about never seeing Kulu again just six months ago, the warm weather of the summer yielded slowly positive news with Kulusevski running on grass, playing with the ball at his feet, and now training with his teammates.

There is a lot of cautious optimism from both the Tottenham and Swedish national team camps, and both of Kulu's experienced managers, Roberto De Zerbi at Spurs and Graham Potter for Sweden, have been playing things extra safe with Kulusevski. And both seem high on the idea of Kulusevski returning and getting back to his best one day.

Tottenham need Dejan Kulusevski now

Now, Tom Barclay of The Sun is reporting some very surprising news. Per the veteran Spurs beat writer, Dejan Kulusevski is making such good progress from his injury 500 days later that he is in contention to be back in the squad by the time Spurs return from the September international break. Yes, Barclay is saying that Kulusevski could be available as early as the Oct. 10 match between Tottenham and Manchester United.

Tottenham have yet to win a single game in five Premier League fixtures this season, and while Kulusevski will need plenty of time before he can play in games and even make an impact on the final score line for Spurs, the fact that he is now very close to returning is huge news.

Spurs desperately need more creativity and heart in the team, and Kulusevski can provide both. He is also a better supplemental source of goals than the other wingers currently at Spurs, and it is not unreasonable to state that he could be Spurs second best source of goals, if fully healthy, behind only former Manchester City and Eintracht Frankfurt (oh, and Wolfsburg) star Omar Marmoush.

Tottenham have to be as careful as possible with Kulusevski, but the fact that he is even in contention for an early return is massive, massive news for Spurs as a club. They won't take him for granted one bit.
