Tottenham Hotspur have had the rug pulled out from them numerous times in the summer transfer window, and a couple of infamous examples occurred last season. Arsenal stole Eberechi Eze from under Spurs noses, and while that ended up being a blessing in disguise with Tottenham landing a younger and better player in Xavi Simons, the real transfer Spurs are upset at missing out on was Nottingham Forest star Morgan Gibbs-White, who went on to score 15 goals for a Forest side that surprisingly finished higher in the table than Tottenham.
Although this isn't the same exact case, Spurs fans are worried that a similar story will develop with Savinho. Everyone has had their hopes up for the Manchester City star to land at N17 this summer transfer window, as Spurs were already interested in the Brazilian star last summer before beginning the window in pursuit of the player.
But Man City have not given Spurs the green light, even with Savinho pushing behind the scenes to leave the former Premier League champions and also following Tottenham players - and liking posts of big moves the Lilywhites have made this summer.
Are Tottenham headed for Savinho heartbreak?
Manchester City were supposed to be open to selling Savinho to Spurs this summer. They barely played him in the Premier League last season, and that was before they signed blockbuster Bournemouth winger Antoine Semenyo in the winter transfer period.
Although Evangelos Marinakis crying wolf to the Premier League in order to block the very fair Morgan Gibbs-White transfer from being completed via a release clause Daniel Levy rather cleverly found out about is very different from Manchester City blocking Savinho leaving despite all signs pointing towards a transfer being sensible, the end result for Tottenham Hotspur would be one and the same: they would be missing out on a transfer that could transform the club for the next five years.
There is no question that Tottenham and Nottingham Forest would have at least swapped places in the table with the upgrade Gibbs-White would have been for Tottenham, in addition to his crucial goals, which would have easily been the most in the Premier League of any Spurs player.
Savinho would also be a vital signing for Spurs, as they desperately need a new starting winger and new starting striker this season. And Savinho used to be a La Liga Player of the Season candidate even before he joined Manchester City from Girona.
