Tottenham Hotspur are having a tough time signing Manchester City star Savinho this summer transfer window. They have been interested in the player since last year and reached out again to the Citizens at the start of this year's transfer window, too. But they have yet to receive the green light despite months of reports and rumors and "talks" this summer.
It seemed like Man City, at least on paper, would be more amicable to a Savinho split this year. After all, it's not like they were playing him much in the Premier League last season, and that was even before they got their grubby hands on Antoine Semenyo in the winter transfer market, leaving Spurs with no chance at signing the Premier League Player of the Season sleeper.
Savinho seems to really want a move out of Man City to Tottenham. He pretty much follows all the big players at Spurs and likes the posts about top signings like Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes, and there's enough interest from Spurs to suggest that something is there.
Savinho's lack of a Tottenham move is puzzling
So the fact that Tottenham have not secured his signing speaks volumes about what might really be going on behind the scenes. As serious as Spurs were about securing the trio of Jan Paul van Hecke, Tonali, and Fernandes at the behest of Roberto De Zerbi, they may have only done so because of the immense pressure De Zerbi put on these three dream signings.
De Zerbi has been wanting forwards, but his interests seem to lie more in Cody Gakpo and Savinho's Man City teammate Omar Marmoush. And while those guys can bring goals that Savinho won't, it is easy to forget that Savinho was a La Liga Player of the Season candidate in 2023/24 when Girona had a Cinderella story and briefly pushed Real Madrid for the title. He, at the age of 21, might be the best buy of them all and certainly could be purchased in conjunction with Gakpo or Marmoush - or someone else.
Tottenham Hotspur being so slow to the punch with Savinho can only mean a couple of things here, because nobody is buying that Manchester City are suddenly so opposed ot selling. It means that Tottenham are not spending a reasonable transfer fee on a 21 year old with world class potential who was a star in a top league or that Spurs don't actually want Savinho all that much anyway, which may be a Roberto De Zerbi call for a more goal scoring profile or just a different player he likes more.
If it is the first case, then that is hugely disappointing, because the asking price for Savinho is not much more than 60 million pounds at this point; he would be cheaper than Mateus Fernandes. Tottenham still have to prove to their fans they are willing to spend big on star forwards and sign priority targets even beyond the ones De Zerbi puts his foot down for. And it seems better to spend close to 70 million pounds on Savinho than an older Cody Gakpo.
