Tottenham have confirmed their first major departure of the summer

Roberto De Zerbi wants to oversee a rapid reset this summer, with this move laying out his intentions.

Yves Bissouma's time at Tottenham Hotspur has drawn to a close, with the club confirming his departure following the expiry of his contract.

Bissouma arrived in north London to much fanfare in 2022 off the back of an impressive spell with Brighton & Hove Albion. However, he initially struggled to settle under Antonio Conte before emerging as the fulcrum of Ange Postecoglou's engine room.

Those first 10 games of Big Ange's reign were truly special. Bissouma was a world-beater, embodying the bravery, courage and naivety of his manager on the touchline. Things started to go awry after he was sent off at Luton Town, and things were never the same after that fateful defeat to Mauricio Pochettino's Chelsea in November 2023.

His time with the club has been defined by inconsistency and controversy, with his penchant for laughing gas (and filming himself) getting him into trouble. Crucially, Biss was invigorated for our run to Europa League glory, but his days in north London were numbered after failing to strike the right note with Thomas Frank.

He appeared only sporadically under three managers last season, and now, we're saying goodbye.

"Thank you for your service and all the best for the future, Biss," Spurs wrote in a rather generous social media farewell.

The Malian midfielder was an incredibly frustrating operator, capable of the stupid and the sublime in equal measure. Nevertheless, he deserves his flowers for the role he played in Bilbao and the lead-up to it.

"Legacy number 864. A crucial part of our Europa League triumph in 2025. Forever part of our history. Thanks for everything, Biss," the club added in a separate post.

We were believed to have the option of extending the midfielder's contract by another year, potentially opening the door to selling the 29-year-old for a free either this summer or next January. However, a clean break, taking a financial hit in the process, shows a clear signal of intent. Roberto De Zerbi wants a swift reset.

With João Palhinha's future also uncertain, Spurs are poised to make a big midfield splash. After wrapping up deals for free agents Andy Robertson and Marcos Senesi, the club will aim to secure the services of Savinho and Jan Paul van Hecke.

A midfield passer is on the agenda, too, and I suspect that profile will be targeted once the next two deals are sewn up. Adam Wharton is the utopia on that front, but I'd be more than content with Nico González, who's one of many players the Cityzens are willing to sell this summer.
