It is only a matter of time before Cristian Romero is finally sold from Tottenham Hotspur, and looking back at how poor Spurs were this season and how little the Argentinian international helped, it would have actually been better if the Lilywhites did not convince the openly disrespectful Romero, who was twerking for Atletico Madrid for months, to stick around and, worse yet, make a player with his head in the clouds their actual captain.
Romero has major interest from Inter Milan and Atletico Madrid again this summer, and he is fully expected to join either of them once he finally lowers his foolhardy wage demands after a truly disastrous season.
There is nobody at Tottenham who thinks of Romero as a good captain or a leader, and it is telling that despite Romero's reputation for being a top ball playing center back and a strong World Cup campaign for finalists Argentina that Roberto De Zerbi and the club have not even tried to convince him to stay. They want him gone.
Joao Palhinha was a real leader for Spurs
But Tottenham did lose a real leader this summer transfer window before Cristian Romero in defensive midfielder Joao Palhinha. It is sad that Spurs were not able to keep him, but they did have to sign Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes to vastly upgarde their control over games and overall quality on the ball in the middle of the park for the scheme De Zerbi wants to bring to Tottenham Hotspur this year.
Still, Palhinha was a hero for Tottenham down the stretch of the season during the relegation battle, and the Lilywhites would not have survived the drop without the Portuguese international. He was immense defensively and in winning possession for this team, and he also offered more in terms of driving the ball than even Conor Gallagher or especially the suddenly disappointing Lucas Bergvall. Plus, Palhinha scored key goals last season, including the one against Everton that confirmed Spurs safety from Premier League relegation.
Palhinha will be missed. He was an unselfish, hard worker who never complained about the coach or his playing time and did everything he could to step up and win games for Tottenham in all phases that were possible. He played beyond his talent and was literally the opposite of Cristian Romero as a person. Romero was lazy, petulant, and flat out did not care about the team by the end of the season. Palhinha was a real leader, and he will be missed dearly for that.
