Thomas Frank gets another early January transfer blow in pursuit of dream target

Should he just give it up?

Tottenham Hotspur are going to be one of the most interested teams in signing a high impact attacking player during the January transfer window, because what they currently have in front of them is bad enough that it could hold them back from qualifying for Champions League football when they otherwise have one of the top goalkeepers, defenses, and fullbacks in the Premier League, as well as a midfield that has great depth (and should be one of the best if Thomas Frank were to play his best XI in midfield every week).

Spurs only have one attacking player worth writing home about, and that is West Ham signing Mohammed Kudus. The strikers have been injured, poor, or both, and the left wingers are far too raw to have truly replaced club legend Son Heung-min.

Frank seems to really want to reunite with former Brentford star striker Ivan Toney, whom he utilized to knock off some of the biggest teams in England a few years ago before the England international bolted for a fat paycheck in Saudi Arabia. After missing out on Bryan Mbeumo and Yoane Wissa - among the other Brentford gems - this past summer, maybe Frank can look outside England to pick Toney back up.

Tottenham will have to wait

In the latest transfer update on the Toney front from Football Insider's Pete O'Rourke, the chances of Thomas Frank reuniting with Ivan Toney are only dwindling further and further downwards. Per O'Rourke, Toney's wages at Saudi Pro League giants Al-Ahli are simply too high for Spurs to afford him. Plus, the logistics of signing Toney in the middle of the season are going to be too difficult for not just Spurs to handle, but the other Premier League clubs like West Ham and Everton.

Obviously, Tottenham are a bigger club and in better position to sign Toney than West Ham and Everton, especially with the Frank factor. But per O'Rourke, if Spurs or any Premier League club truly want the veteran Saudi Pro League striker on their team, a transfer in the summer 2026 window is much more realistic than a mid season swoop for the former Brentford star.

At this point, Frank's chances of signing Toney as an immediate striker upgrade in January are slim to none, bordering on none. It's not a bad idea for Spurs to keep sounding out the Toney track, but they have to look at other options at this point.
