There is a pipe dream Lucas Bergvall transfer swap deal Tottenham have to at least try

Tottenham Hotspur are closing in on a bold double swoop for dream No. 6 transfer targets Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes, as these two potential pillars of the midfield are viewed as the next priorities for manager Roberto De Zerbi. Spurs already overhauled the defense, sealing the deal with Jan Paul van Hecke from Brighton for De Zerbi, and now their next task in rebuilding the squad step by step is the midfield.

At the same time, Spurs are preparing for a midfield exit, as Lucas Bergvall got a bit touchy feely about the potential competition coming in at N17 if Fernandes and Tonali sign on, and he requested a transfer away from the club in order to pursue more playing time elsewhere.

Tottenham had actually planned the Fernandes and Tonali double swoop without considering Bergvall as an exit, so it is plausible Spurs could sign a third midfielder if they get rid of Bergvall. The only other strong link is Adam Wharton of Crystal Palace, but he is another 6. And Spurs could be interested in a more attacking player to replace Bergvall.

Morgan Gibbs-White is still a dream option

There is one other name, on the list of the high profile players who got away from Spurs last season, who could make sense for Tottenham Hotspur in 2026. And that is Morgan Gibbs-White of Nottingham Forest. There are still whispers of mutual interest in the player Daniel Levy had signed dead to rights to a release clause, only for Evangelos Marinakis to raise up a stink and block the deal, leading to MGW re-siging - and Levy doing precisely nothing to fight back.

Well, Gibbs-White went on to have a season for the ages with 15 goals from midfield, and while he is more of an attacking midfielder and Tottenham already have both Xavi Simons and James Maddison, both men are coming off torn ACLs. And there is room for Simons or Gibbs-White to play as 8's - or even as duel 10's...or even off the wing.

Gibbs-White is a unique talent and a great fit for Tottenham, and now with Nottingham Forest themselves interested in Bergvall, the chance for Spurs to sign MGW from Forest has reopened. Forest are obviously reluctant to sell MGW, especially to Tottenham, but Bergvall could change their minds, though Bergvall would tecnically be the Elliot Anderson replacement (with the breakout midfielder closely linked to Manchester City and Manchester United).

Even though Lucas Bergvall is just 20 years old and highly talented, a one for one swap with Morgan Gibbs-White is not plausible, given how valuable MGW is now after scoring 15 Premier League goals as a midfielder. But Bergvall could significantly reduce the price so that Spurs only have to pay 30-40 milllion pounds in addition to Bergvall to make the numbers work. It is a bold idea, but since Bergvall is going anyway, it is a deal worth trying to bring in an even better player to win here and now.
