Young Tottenham Hotspur center midfielder Lucas Bergvall had himself a solid game to start the September international break, as he turned in a positive all around performance during Sweden's 2-1 win over Romania in the Nations League.
While Bergvall could have been more creative, which is a common complaint of the U21 midfielder, he was an asset on both ends of the pitch for his country in the victory. In addition to three combined dribbles completed and fouls drawn in the box to box role, Bergvall also had two tackles and two interceptions to deliver another excellent defensive performance. And he was a lot crisper on the ball than he has been in the past for Sweden, including this summer at the World Cup, completing around 95 percent of his 59 pass attempts.
It isn't Bergvall's first good game of the 2026/27 campaign for club or country either. Bergvall had an awful start to the season in the 3-0 loss to Brentford, as Roberto De Zerbi started him against everyone's wishes and paid for it, with Bergvall looking more headless chicken than footballer.
Lucas Bergvall is turning it around
He didn't even get things right in the 5-1 win over Charlton Athletic in the League Cup, but, lately, Lucas Bergvall looks like he is getting everything to click not long after De Zerbi gave him a new contract despite the poor start to the season.
The 20 year old center midfielder played an amazing game in his last start, as even though Tottenham Hotspur were bounced out of the League Cup with a Third Round defeat to Liverpool by a score of 3-1, Bergvall was the best player on the pitch. He had six combined tackles and interceptions with three key passes and two dribbles completed as the main ball winning and even creative hub of the team.
Following that up with a great performance for Sweden against Romania is a good message for Bergvall to send to Roberto De Zerbi, and with Tottenham desperate for any kind of a spark, Bergvall is making a statement that he is ready for serious minutes in the rotation. Of course, the midfield is the least of Spurs worries, as Rodrigo Bentancur, Sandro Tonali, and even an out of position Mateus Fernandes are all playing reasonably well. But even with a crowded midfield, Bergvall is showing that he is capable of starting when the time calls for it, too.
