Taking a look at last season's corresponding fixtures
By Tom Vinall
An interesting set of numbers were recently posted on social media, which compared Tottenham Hotspur’s numbers this season — to the games against the same opponents last season.
Of course, Leicester City were not in the Premier League last season, so the sample included the away game against Burnley last season - the team that had won the Championship the season before Leicester did.
With the same results last season, Spurs had ten points, they now have 13. They had scored seventeen goals last season, they now have eighteen. They had conceded 20 goals - they have conceded nine this season. They had 15.33 xG, they now have 16.43. The xG against was 15.2, it now 9.06.
For those that cannot recite the results last season off the top of their head, here they are next to this season, with last seasons result first, and this seasons result second.
5-2 win at Burnley — 1-1 draw at Leicester. 2-1 win at home to Everton — 4-0 win. 4-0 defeat at Newcastle United — 2-1 defeat. 2-3 defeat at home to Arsenal — 0-1 defeat. 3-2 win at home to Brentford — 3-1 win. 2-2 draw at Manchester United — 0-3 win. 4-2 defeat at Brighton and Hove Albion — 3-2 defeat. 1-2 defeat at home to West Ham United — 4-1 win.
The only result that is worse than last season, is drawing at Leicester, having won at Burnley. Based on early season evidence, Leicester are a better side than Burnley were. They are one of two sides, along with Manchester City, to have scored in every Premier League game so far this season.
Whilst it was the same result, even the defeat at Newcastle was a much more competitive game. The collapse at Brighton made for a feeling more bitter than going 4-0 down there last season, but at least had one good half, compared to 15 minutes last season.
Despite winning, Spurs were pretty fortunate to beat Everton at home last season, yet wiped the floor with them this term. The Arsenal game was pretty terrible this year, and although the first half wasn't as bad as last season, the ending of that game was much better than in September.
Ange's side actually played well at Old Trafford last season, and there was red card this time, but there was no doubt it was an even better performance regardless, completely obliterating their hosts.
