Tottenham Hotspur always seem to have rotten luck with injuries, and they already came into the 2025/26 Premier League and Champions League seasons short-handed with multi-month ailments to star midfielders Dejan Kulusevski and Lucas Bergvall.
Every international break leaves Spurs supporters holding their breaths that another star isn't injured. Strikers Dominic Solanke and Randal Kolo Muani are the main high-profile absences right now, though the latter seems to be rounding his way back into the team for his Tottenham debut.
Spurs fans just lost backup midfielder Yves Bissouma to a potentially serious injury over the October break, so when they heard word that star player Lucas Bergvall was substituted at the half time whistle of Sweden's disappointing match against Kosovo, they could only brace for the worst. Bergvall had just recovered from a multi-month injury at the end of the 2024/25 season.
The good news is that Bergvall isn't injured. He confirmed to the press in Sweden that he was substituted at the half for non-injury reasons by incompetent manager John Dahl Tomasson, and there's little doubt both Bergvall and others around the Sweden national team will be happy to see the backside of "JDL" now that he's been fired following a series of poor results.
Yves Bissouma is the only one hurt
Tottenham fans will also be happy to see Tomasson gone by extension, but the main news they will be celebrating is the reassurance that Bergvall isn't injured. Although they will wish Bissouma the best personally, the veteran backup is already on the outs anyway, so the main sporting blow of his injury is that it may make it harder to sell him.
Bergvall, meanwhile, is a vital starter and one of the team's three best midfielders alongside new signings Xavi Simons and Joao Palhinha. After Thomas Frank was slow to start him to begin the 2025/26 campaign, the Danish manager has begun to realize that the U21 center midfield sensation is indeed one of his important players.
With the October international fixtures wrapping up, Tottenham must prepare to face Aston Villa next on Sunday in the return of the Premier League, and Spurs fans will be delighted to hear that there should be nothing keeping Bergvall out of the game. His substitution was just the case of a bad manager making one final bad decision before getting the can, which is a scenario Spurs fans are as familiar with as the injuries. Bergvall is fine.
