Tottenham Hotspur just surprised fans in a pleasant way, as even though the summer transfer window is over and the Richarlison drama is still lingering, they have managed to give the Lilywhite faithful one more positive bit of news. And that is a contract extension for young center midfielder Lucas Bergvall, who has put pen to paper to a new contract extension that will keep him at N17 through the 2031/32 season.
Bergvall endured a difficult 2025/26 Premier League season under Thomas Frank and Igor Tudor, and even though he had returned from nagging injury woes for Roberto De Zerbi, the new manager did not utilize him much since he needed the veteran midfielders to steady the ship en route to Premier League survival.
However, miffed at the interest in Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes, Bergvall submitted a transfer request during the World Cup and seemed dangerously close to a move to either Aston Villa or Nottingham Forest, which would have been a disastrous outcome for Spurs.
Lucas Bergvall isn't afraid to compete
De Zerbi, though, was able to convince Bergvall to stay, and he even started the Swedish international, perhaps against his better judgment, against Brentford and Charlton Athletic to start the new season. And while Bergvall was atrocious in both games, he is sitting here with an extension.
During the worst of the transfer saga this summer, Tottenham Hotspur fans were worried that Lucas Bergvall did not have a good mentality and wanted to leave instead of competing with Mateus Fernandes, Sandro Tonali, Archie Gray, and Rodrigo Bentancur for minutes.
Based on Roberto De Zerbi's quotes about Bergvall after the extension, those concerns could not be more untrue. The Italian manager said, via The Spurs Watch:
“Lucas is brave, he wants responsibility and has the personality to play in big moments. He also understands that development is a process and he has shown a fantastic attitude towards working on the areas of his game where he can become even better. I believe his best football is still ahead of him and we want to give Lucas the platform to reach his full potential.”
Hearing that from the manager must be a big confidence booster for the young Bergvall, who has honestly looked like he has been lacking confidence, which is understandable since a lot of players had that issue last season under the disaster reign of Thomas Frank. But against Brentford, Bergvall looked scared and not himself out there. It is great to see the manager and the club backing him, especially at a time when people are concerned that De Zerbi won't have the backs of his players in light of the Richarlison drama.
