Tottenham Hotspur have shown real improvements in terms of progressing the ball and having more possession than the other team, but they are winless to start the 2026/27 Premier League season and have shown no improvements in terms of the actual results.
Roberto De Zerbi knows he has a lot of work to do, and whlie ranking the best players on Spurs when they are dead last in the league feels like a cruel exercise, a few players have actually been performing well. Here are the top five Tottenham players, ranked, after five Matchdays.
5. RW Mohammed Kudus
Mohammed Kudus makes it into the top five almost by default, but while he has not started a game yet in the Premier League due to fitness issues carrying over from the last season, he has shown a real spark when he is on the pitch in the second half. Kudus assisted Spurs first goal of the Premier League campaign and is averaging 7.3 dribbles completed and 2.2 key passes per 90 minutes.
4. DM Rodrigo Bentancur
Rodrigo Bentancur, not Sandro Tonali or even Mateus Fernandes, has been the best midfielder on Tottenham Hotspur this season as his resurgence continues under De Zerbi. He is what Joao Palhinha was to Spurs last season, providing an important layer of "grinta" that this Spurs midfield needs to show.
3. CB Micky van de Ven
Micky van de Ven has also been a man rejuvenated by De Zerbi after looking like he was going to give up on football udner Thomas Frank. With Jan Paul van Hecke by his side, the new Tottenham captain looks like a much more solid and effective defender, and he is a real reason for hope for this team. Spurs have been tellingly awful without him in the 11.
2. CB Jan Paul van Hecke
Jan Paul van Hecke has been exactly as Roberto De Zerbi advertised, putting up the best progressive and overall passing numbers of any player in the Premier League. His defense could use improvement, but it's still been above average.
1. RW Savio
Savio is averaging an insane six combined dribbles completed and fouls drawn this season with 3.4 key passes per 90 minutes. The Brazilian international is quietly on fire creatively, doing exactly what Spurs envisioned in terms of his take ons and chaos creation. Spurs do need him to show goal threat, but in comparison to how awful the rest of the attack has been and how difficult his job is, Savio is Spurs best player right now.
