Tottenham to showdown with Championship side in Carabao Cup
By Tom Vinall
It has been confirmed that Tottenham Hotspur will face Coventry City in the third round of the Carabao Cup after former Spurs players Les Ferdinand and Michael Dawson drew the two sides together on Wednesday night.
Spurs have improved on last season's effort without kicking a ball. They lost on penalties to Fulham in the second round last season, a round they did not need to play in this year due to the European places finish.
Coventry have shown that they can compete with Premier League teams in the domestic cups. In last season's FA Cup semi-final, they were a Haji Wright toenail away from completing a 3-0 comeback and beating Manchester United 4-3 in what would have been one of the most famous football games of all time, never mind in the FA Cup
They cruelly went on to lose on penalties, but regardless they were able to show that they aren’t in these games to roll over and have their tummies tickled. They are there to seriously compete, and try and cause an upset.
Coventry are in the third round after beating Bristol City away from home 1-0, before beating Oxford United at home by the same scoreline.

Spurs will be a much tougher proposition than anything they have come up against so far, but it would be disingenuous to suggest that this game is a foregone conclusion.
Fellow Premier League side Ipswich Town would have been more fancied to beat League Two side AFC Wimbledon than Spurs are to beat Coventry. And yet despite being in League Two, Wimbledon, led by Spurs academy graduate Johnnie Jackson, managed to knock their Premier League opponents out on penalties.
That said, it is still a decent opportunity for Tottenham to progress and get one step closer to winning that much-coveted silverware that has been so craved by everyone at the club for so long.
The Carabao Cup third round takes place in the weeks commencing the 16th and 23rd of September, but there is an Elephant in the room.
The Champions League begins the week commencing the 16th of September, and the Europa League the week commencing the 23rd. Therefore, no two teams competing in Europe could be drawn against each other in this round.
As a result, with Spurs being in the Europa League, they will play their game at Coventry City the week commencing the 16th of September.
