Tottenham Hotspur finds itself in a familiar predicament: in search of reinforcements after a rocky start.

The North London club has secured just seven points from the first five matches of the Premier League and has struggled to find a consistent starting eleven.

With Ange Postecoglou at the helm, the squad's depth is increasingly under scrutiny, leading to rumours about potential signings ahead of the next summer transfer window.

One player on Spurs' radar is Angel Gomes, currently playing in Ligue 1 with Lille. The 24-year-old midfielder has emerged as a potential target for Tottenham, especially given that his contract expires next summer, allowing for a free transfer.

Gomes has garnered attention not just from Spurs, but also from Premier League giants Manchester United, Liverpool, and Newcastle United, all vying for his signature.

Gomes' recent performances have been impressive enough to earn him a call-up to the England national team, where he has caught the eye of manager Lee Carsley.

Carsley praised Gomes for his unique playing style, which allows him to operate effectively both as a deeper midfielder and a creative playmaker:

"Angel’s different from what we’ve got in terms of a player who can play deeper but play like a ten. He’s very skillful."

Despite this praise, there are lingering concerns about Gomes’ overall impact at his current club. Since joining Lille in 2020 on a free transfer from Manchester United, he has recorded only eight goals in 121 appearances.

Tottenham shouldn't feel an urgency to sign Gomes, at least not at this moment. The newly signed, and unfortunately recently injured, Wilson Odobert has the potential to reach Gomes' level and even surpass it, considering what we've seen from the PSG academy graduate at Burnley.

For now, it’s best to take this information with a pinch of salt and wait until the summer of 2025 approaches.
