As per outlet TeamTalk, Sky Bet Championship side Stoke City are in talks with Tottenham Hotspur central defender Ashley Phillips, who says that Spurs are allowing him to leave on loan before the summer transfer window shuts next week.

Phillips had been linked to La Liga side Getafe earlier on in the window, in a bit of a surprise link, but talk of a deal suddenly went very quiet.

So, should a move happen - what do we know about how productive, or unproductive, it may be? Let's take a look.

Stoke City manager Steven Schumacher has developed a reputation for developing young players. Finn Azaz moved from Plymouth to Middlesbrough on the back of his development under Schumacher, and Morgan Whittaker was linked with a move to Lazio as a result of his progress under Schumacher.

The likes of Bali Mumba and Ki-Jana Hoever, amongst other players, have also developed under Schumacher's stewardship, so you would feel pretty pleased if Stoke City was the place Spurs sent Phillips to continue his development in the 24/25 season.

Ironically, Phillips spent the second half of the season on loan at Plymouth Argyle last season, joining just three weeks after Schumacher had left to be closer to his home in Liverpool by joining Stoke City.

Stoke likes to bring in young players to develop, having this summer already made the loan signings of Lewis Koumas from Liverpool and Andrew Moran from Brighton and Hove Albion, whilst signing Mohammed Olabosun Lawal on a permanent transfer from Celtic.

Phillips would have the opportunity to be guided by experienced central defender Ben Gibson, who was once called up and named in an England matchday squad. He would be working with goalkeeper Viktor Johansson, who was unanimously seen as the best goalkeeper in the Championship last season, in spite of Rotherham's relegation.

All in all, in theory - this would be a productive loan for Phillips' development.
