Lucas Bergvall has today received his first proper call-up to the Sweden senior men’s international squad, for their nations league fixtures against Azerbaijan and Estonia next month.

This comes as a reward for his impressive pre-season with the Spurs first team, as well as his lively cameo at Leicester City during the opening game.

He is the second teenager contracted to Spurs to get an international call-up this week, with Yang Min-Hyeok being named in South Korea’s squad to face Palestine and Oman.

He is joined by club team mate Dejan Kulusevski, and no doubt Spurs fans will be keeping a keen on eye on how the pair of them do together over the break. It is nice to see both Min-Hyeok and Bergvall have club teammates with them to help guide them.

The game at Azerbaijan is on the 5th of September, just four days after Tottenham’s trip to Newcastle United on Sunday. In theory, Bergvall could play against Alexander Isak and Emil Krafth on Sunday, and with them next Thursday.

He did make his senior debut for Sweden back in January, but that was a squad just with domestic players. This time it feels a bit more real, especially with competitive games.

Despite being just 18, Bergvall already has 5 caps for Sweden U21s and his rapid progression through the age groups and then into the senior team shows just how highly rated the Spurs youngster is.

Sweden find themselves in Nations League Group C, having been relegated from Group B during the previous edition of the tournament. In their group, they are alongside the aforementioned Azerbaijan and Estonia, as well as tougher test Slovakia.

It has been a difficult time for Sweden, having failed to qualify for the previous World Cup and European Championships, but everyone is excited for the new era under Jon Dahl Tomasson.

As touched on, their first game away at Azerbaijan is on the 5th of September, 17:00 BST and 12:00 ET. Their second game, at home to Estonia, is on the 8th of September, 19:45 BST and 14:45 ET.
