Tottenham Hotspur could face a significant setback as midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur stands on the brink of a potentially lengthy suspension, which could see him miss up to 12 matches. The Uruguayan is under investigation by the Football Association (FA) for what is being termed an "aggravated breach" of its rules, stemming from comments he made about his teammate, Son Heung-min.

The controversy arose from remarks Bentancur made in an interview, suggesting that he and his cousins “all look the same,” a comment he later described as a "bad joke." While Bentancur apologised, and Son accepted the apology, the FA has decided to press charges, leading to fears that Bentancur could be sidelined for a considerable period.

If the FA's charge results in a 12-match suspension, Tottenham’s fixtures would be severely impacted. The potential ban would cover a host of Premier League games including crucial fixtures against Manchester United, Brighton, West Ham, Crystal Palace, Aston Villa, Manchester City, Fulham, Bournemouth, Chelsea, and Southampton. Additionally, if Spurs advance beyond the third round of the Carabao Cup, the ban might extend to that competition as well.

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou is in for a tough ride if Bentancur ends up being banned. With a packed schedule ahead, the Aussie boss will have his work cut out trying to keep the squad balanced and in form without the Uruguayan. Missing Bentancur now could be a real headache, especially as Spurs need to handle player fitness and rotation carefully to avoid the injury woes they faced last season.

The suspension, if imposed, will only apply to domestic matches, meaning Bentancur will still be eligible for Tottenham’s Europa League fixtures. However, the loss of a key player like Bentancur in the Premier League could undermine Spurs' efforts to maintain their competitive edge in both domestic and European competitions.

Bentancur has until September 19 to respond to the FA’s charges. I am hoping for a favourable resolution, but if the suspension is upheld, it will be a blow to the team’s ambitions this season.
