According to The Athletic, Archie Gray and Lucas Bergvall have impressed so much in training and in pre-season friendlies, that the club no longer considers signing a new-all action midfielder as a priority for them this summer.

They had reported earlier in the summer that Spurs were after an energetic, dynamic, box-to-box option but it appears that they no longer think that way after Gray and Bergvall have done so much to impress.

Bergvall had an impressive cameo in the draw at Leicester City, and the Spurs staff have been raving about Gray, being in awe of how good he is.

With Bentancur set to miss the game against Everton, and Ange Postecoglou saying that Bissouma needs to regain his trust, it could well open the door for Gray to start this weekend. Maybe even Bergvall, considering Ange's willingness to go all-out-attack on Monday night.

At this moment in time, it feels like a midfield double pivot of Gray and Pape Sarr would be the best, and most balanced option as the starting pair on Saturday against Sean Dyche's Everton side.

Despite this, Spurs fans are still crying out for a "pure 6" who is capable of putting out fires and helping to shore the side up defensively, given their alarming openness at the moment.

They see a natural defensive midfielder as someone who can unlock the likes of Gray playing in the pivot alongside them. The issue is - the DM market is incredibly scarce.

There is no point in signing a player for the sake of having them on board if they are not going to be able to make telling contributions and fit the side. Ange plays a unique, high-octane system, and there is only a certain amount of players who can fit into that.
