Tottenham competes with Serie A giants for midfielder signing
- Tottenham Hotspur are pursuing a Celtic midfielder
- They face competition from clubs in England, Spain, Germany, and Italy
Tottenham Hotspur are eyeing Celtic midfielder Matt O’Riley, but they face stiff competition from clubs in England, Spain, Germany, and now AS Roma has entered the fray for his signature.
O’Riley, born and raised in London, came through the Fulham academy but was released by the Cottagers in the summer of 2020. He had to wait over half a year before being picked up by MK Dons, and just a year later, he signed for Celtic.
The Danish international has since made 121 appearances for the Scottish side, scoring 27 goals and providing 34 assists, becoming a three-time SPL champion in the process.
Interestingly, it was Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou who first brought O’Riley to Glasgow. Now, the Australian appears interested in signing him once more, despite reported interest from West Ham. GiveMeSport reports that O’Riley is keen to prove himself in the Premier League, although he has several potential destinations across Europe to consider this summer.

Lyall Thomas reveals that AS Roma are now monitoring O’Riley’s situation, along with four other sides. It is believed Roma would need to sell at least one player to fund a potential deal. Additionally, a Bundesliga side competing in the Champions League next season is on the list, as are two Premier League teams and Atletico Madrid.
Matt O’Riley is a very good player, and the fact he has a relationship with Postecoglou from before would give Tottenham an edge in any transfer battle. Whether he’s the player Tottenham wants this summer or not, remains to be seen, but he could be a surprise success in the Premier League.
Tottenham fans will want to see the club bring in players who are practically guaranteed to improve their starting eleven. They will hopefully be targeting more established players than O’Riley as their primary transfer targets.
What do you think, Spurs fans? Is Matt O’Riley the right addition to strengthen our midfield, or should we aim for more experienced talent?
