James Maddison was once again left out of the England squad, and Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou has given him clear advice on how to earn a recall.

Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou has urged James Maddison to keep making an impact for his club, despite being left out of the England squad for the upcoming UEFA Nations League matches against Greece and Finland.

Maddison, who has been one of the Premier League’s standout playmakers for several seasons, was snubbed once again, even after an impressive start to the 2024/25 campaign.

The 27-year-old midfielder has already notched up one goal and two assists in six Premier League appearances this season.

He also leads Spurs in key areas such as progressive passes (49) and successful dribbles (10), and is second in chances created (13) and passes into the final third (34).

Despite these contributions, Maddison has been overlooked by interim England manager Lee Carsley, a decision that surprised many given his strong form.

Postecoglou, speaking in his Friday press conference, empathised with Maddison’s disappointment but offered words of encouragement.

The Spurs boss acknowledged that being left out of the national team can be tough for any player but emphasised the importance of maintaining focus and continuing to perform at a high level for the club.

“Of course, he’s disappointed, but he’s playing exceptionally well,” Postecoglou said. “Sometimes, in football, you don’t always get what you want. There are circumstances beyond your control, but that shouldn’t take away from everything else you’re doing. He’s been brilliant for us, and he’s made an impact in every game.”

Maddison was part of England’s provisional squad for Euro 2024 but missed out on the final selection as the Three Lions reached the final, only to lose 2-1 to Spain.

His exclusion this time around raises questions about what more the midfielder needs to do to earn a consistent place in the national team setup.

Postecoglou believes that Maddison’s current form is undeniable and that, if he keeps performing as he has been, a return to the England squad is inevitable. “He’s an important part of our midfield, and if he continues playing at this level, I have no doubt he’ll get selected again. But it’s crucial that he doesn’t put all his energy into being disappointed.”
