The super star from Portugal: Why Tottenham would benefit from Jota on the wing

Spurs are building out their attacking options with talent from across Europe, but perhaps a player from the Saudi Pro League could provide what Ange Postecoglou is looking for.

Fifteen goal contributions across 24 games in the 2021/22 Scottish Premiership. Twenty-one goal contributions across 29 games in the 2022/23 league season.

Jota truly knew how to put on a show when he played under Ange Postecoglou at Celtic in the seasons before the Australian manager made his way to North London, and the Portuguese winger made his way to Saudi Arabia.

Since joining Al-Ittihad in July of 2023 on a €29.1m fee, Jota has managed just six goal contributions in 25 matches (Transfermarkt). However, there's still plenty of room for hope for the player and his future in competitive football.

At just 25-years-old, the attacker arguably still has his best years in front of him.

The truth of the matter is that, apart from a rough spell of injuries in the 22/23 season, the player has only missed one game due to physical fitness since April of 2023 (Transfermarkt).

Instead, it seems that his current club (and manager, for that matter), have simply opted to leave him out of the plans, not giving the winger the playing time he was expecting when leaving what many thought would be his long-term club.

Now, it seems that Jota sits at an impasse and with a very difficult decision to make: continue to fight for time with his current club and earn a hefty salary, or look to take his talents elsewhere in an effort to fight for something more than the paycheck.

At Tottenham Hotspur, the career he once knew could come back to life. Under Ange, a manager whose seen many a player ebb and flow in form, and who knows that Jota can play (and score, a lot) in his system, the answer seems clearer than day.

Currently, the Portuguese footballer is valued by Transfermarkt at just €9m, a bargain for a player who was scoring in the Champions League roughly a year ago.
