Spurs international watch: Great night for Tottenham defender
By Tom Vinall
Destiny Udogie and Guglielmo Vicario's Italy pulled off a highly impressive and unfancied win in their Nations League opener, winning 3-1 away to France at the Parc Des Princes.
Vicario was on the bench, as expected with Gianluigi Donnarumma being the captain, and so was Udogie, despite Luciano Spalletti playing a three-at-the-back formation with wing-backs, a setup that Udogie thrived in during his time in Serie A with Udinese, and was probably part of the reason Spurs initially signed him under Antonio Conte.
Italy went behind in the first minute thanks to a goal from Bradley Barcola, but Federico Dimarco showed why, like Udogie, he has thrived as a wing-back at club level, scoring with a superb finish after 30 minutes, and the sides went into the interval all square.

Davide Frattesi put Italy ahead five minutes into the second half and was then replaced by Udogie himself 12 minutes later. Another 12 minutes after that, Udogie had an assist. Cutting inside from the left, he threaded a pass which was anticipated by Giacomo Raspadori who left Arsenal defender William Saliba scrambling as he knocked the ball past him before having the composure to slot the ball past Mike Maignan in the France goal.
Considering how solid and stubborn France were at the Euros, conceding just three goals, two from open play, that came in the same game against eventual champions Spain, to go there and score three goals is seriously impressive and it is great to see Udogie contribute to that with an assist off the bench.
The Spurs left-back also made three tackles and two clearances in his 28-minute cameo off the bench and will be giving Spalletti a selection headache for the next game, despite the goal from Dimarco.
That game will be against Israel on Monday, with kick off being 19:45 BST and 14:45 ET.
