Tottenham Hotspur are taking decisive steps to secure the future of Cristian Romero, according to a recent report by GiveMeSport.

With Real Madrid showing keen interest in the Argentine defender, Spurs are prepared to offer Romero a lucrative new contract to dissuade the Spanish giants from pursuing him further.

The report highlights that Tottenham are ready to make Romero their highest-paid player, offering him a substantial pay rise to £200,000 per week.

This move would see the 27-year-old surpass current top earner Son Heung-min, who earns approximately £190,000 weekly. The club’s approach shows just how keen they are to hold onto Romero, especially with all the increasing chatter about his future.

Real Madrid are reportedly contemplating a renewed bid for Romero, which has prompted Tottenham to act swiftly. The Lilywhites are planning to initiate contract discussions with Romero and his representatives imminently.

In addition to the new contract talks, Tottenham are bracing themselves for a potential transfer battle. Should Real Madrid make a formal offer, Spurs are said to be prepared to hold out for a transfer fee of around £100 million.

I think it’s completely normal for Tottenham to want to build with Romero and Son as the cornerstones of the project. Both are undoubtedly the two most important players in the squad, and when teams like Real Madrid come knocking, swift action is necessary.

In the case of the Argentine centre-back, it will all come down to his ambitions. I don’t find it at all unlikely that Romero might wait a few months to see how things progress in North London, and if things go well, I consider his renewal quite possible. However, if Tottenham misses out on the Champions League again, the situation could become very difficult.
