Tottenham Hotspur are unlikely to secure Conor Gallagher's signature this summer, despite their strong interest. However, the club remains determined to bolster their midfield options, even after finalizing the Archie Gray deal this week.

Back in June, The Athletic reported that Conor Gallagher was a top target for Tottenham. Both the club's recruitment team and manager Ange Postecoglou have been keen admirers of the midfielder. Postecoglou publicly praised Gallagher's energy and disruptive playstyle during his punditry duties on ITV, highlighting how his off-the-ball movement can unsettle opposing defenses.

One of the driving factors behind Tottenham's interest in Gallagher was the pressure of PSR regulations. As a product of Chelsea's youth system, Gallagher would have counted as 100% profit towards Chelsea's financial books, making him an attractive transfer option for the Blues. Reports indicated that Chelsea had placed a £50 million price tag on the England international, whose contract expires in June 2025.

However, the likelihood of a deal for Gallagher now seems slim. According to Football Insider, Chelsea have completed enough sales, including Ian Maatsen's transfer, to comply with profit and sustainability regulations. Gallagher also expressed his desire to stay at Chelsea despite stalled contract negotiations.

Report confirms Tottenham are working on new midfield signing

While the signing of Gallagher appears increasingly unlikely, Tottenham's pursuit of another central midfielder remains a priority. The acquisition of Archie Gray and newcomer Lucas Bergvall offers some flexibility, with Gray being capable of operating both in central midfield and at right-back. However, adding an experienced midfielder like Gallagher would have provided an immediate boost to Tottenham's midfield depth and quality.

Postecoglou's admiration for Gallagher's energetic and disruptive playstyle underscores the tactical benefits he could have brought to Tottenham. His ability to disorganize low blocks and break up opposition play would have addressed one of Spurs' key weaknesses from last season. Despite the setback, Tottenham's continued search for midfield reinforcements demonstrates the club's commitment to strengthening their squad ahead of the new season.
