Liverpool has joined Tottenham Hotspur in the race to sign Athletic Bilbao winger Nico Williams, whose impressive performances at the EURO 2024 in Germany this summer have heightened interest in the young talent.

In April, it was reported that Spurs were among several Premier League clubs eyeing the 21-year-old, who has a £42.8 million buyout clause in his contract with Bilbao.

Despite the mounting speculation, Williams has publicly downplayed the idea of leaving his current club, stating to Nogomania, “I signed a contract with Bilbao a few weeks ago, and I feel very happy there.”

On July 3rd, Football Insider confirmed that Tottenham and Aston Villa were still closely monitoring Williams, indicating that there are admirers within the North London club who are keen on the Spanish speedster.

However, the competition for Williams’ signature has intensified with new reports suggesting that Liverpool could emerge as a strong contender if they fail to secure their primary target, Anthony Gordon, from Newcastle United.

Liverpool joins Tottenham in pursuit of young winger

Liverpool’s new manager, Arne Slot, is reportedly looking to bolster his attacking options this summer, and Williams is high on the club’s list of potential recruits.

Football Insider highlights that the Reds have long admired the young winger, and a move for him could complicate Tottenham’s pursuit. Although Williams has expressed a desire to join Barcelona, financial constraints may prevent the Catalan giants from making a viable offer.

Williams’ standout performances for Spain this summer have further validated why he is on the radar of several top clubs. His pace, dribbling skills, and overall impact on the field make him a highly sought-after prospect. Watching him excel at the international level, it’s clear why Tottenham fans are eager to see him don the lily-white jersey and light up the Premier League.

However, the increasing interest from clubs like Liverpool may diminish Tottenham’s chances of landing Williams. Each impressive game he plays for Spain and every new rumor of another club’s interest seem to push the possibility of a Spurs transfer further out of reach.

Given the reported interest dating back to April, it appears that the opportunity for Spurs to secure Williams might be slipping away.
