Pundit suggests player on transfer list could still remain at Tottenham
By Manuel Meza
With the summer transfer window winding down, Tottenham Hotspur has a big decision to make about Djed Spence. According to journalist Dean Jones, there's a 50/50 chance that Spence, the young right-back they picked up from Middlesbrough for £20 million in 2022, might be on his way out before the deadline on August 31.
Spence arrived at Tottenham with high hopes, buoyed by an impressive loan spell at Nottingham Forest. Spurs fans anticipated that he would thrive in Antonio Conte’s setup, which seemed tailor-made for his blend of defensive solidity and attacking flair. However, Spence’s time at Tottenham has been anything but smooth.
Since his arrival, Spence has struggled to make a mark, spending the majority of his time out on loan. His performance has drawn criticism from former managers Neil Warnock and Daniel Farke, who have raised concerns about his attitude and effectiveness.
Despite these setbacks, Spence has shown signs of improvement during the pre-season. His standout display in a 5-1 victory over Hearts, where he scored a goal and provided an assist, has sparked renewed hope that he could yet prove his worth at Spurs.

Jones mentioned on the Ranks FC Ultras Podcast that Spence’s future is still very much up in the air, with the situation being about 50/50. He pointed out that while there’s a reasonable chance he could leave, he has been given an unexpected opportunity to prove himself.
Ange Postecoglou, the current manager of Tottenham, has also praised Spence for his recent performances. He noted that Spence has had a challenging few years but has been performing well in training. Postecoglou stated that he views all players currently with the team as Tottenham players unless something changes unexpectedly.
With Emerson Royal moving on, Tottenham is in the market for a reliable backup right-back. Although Spence's loan stints haven't been stellar, he has shown he's a good player when he's in the right mindset. Spurs might give him until January to show what he can do. If he doesn't meet expectations by then, they might look to sell him in the winter transfer window.
Do you think Tottenham should give Djed Spence more time to prove himself, or is it time for a change?
