Tottenham hesitates to meet asking price for Premier League transfer target

Tottenham Hotspur are eager to boost their attack this summer, eyeing Brentford's Ivan Toney as a prime candidate. Journalist Dean Jones mentions that Spurs hope to snag him for under £40 million, which is quite a bit lower than Brentford's current asking price of £50 million.
GiveMeSport reports that Tottenham is expected to make a ‘lowball’ bid for Toney, aiming to leverage Brentford’s willingness to negotiate. This strategy mirrors Tottenham's successful acquisition of James Maddison last summer, who joined the club for a bargain price. The hope is that Brentford might further reduce their demands as the transfer window progresses and the urgency to sell increases.
West Ham and Tottenham are the two clubs most likely to move for Toney in the coming weeks. However, as of now, Spurs have yet to make an official approach. TalkSPORT indicates that Toney himself prefers a move to Tottenham, which could give the North London club an edge in securing his signature. Toney's desire to join the Lilywhites provides Spurs with a significant morale boost in this transfer race.
Despite Brentford lowering their initial asking price for Toney, Tottenham remains firm on their stance not to exceed the £40 million mark. Dean Jones suggests that such a deal would be a significant win for Tottenham, aligning with their cautious yet ambitious transfer policy. He also mentions the potential departure of Richarlison, which would create a vacancy for a new striker in Ange Postecoglou’s squad.

“It is still looking viable that Richarlison leaves Tottenham. There has been talk about Santi Gimenez, and Jonathan David, they are on the list, but Ivan Toney is there too. If they can get him, in their eyes, under £40 million, I don’t think that’s a bad idea for Tottenham at all,” said Jones.
Getting Toney for under £40 million would be a smart move, especially considering how expensive proven Premier League players can be. As an England international with a solid goal-scoring record and Premier League experience, Toney would be a great addition to Spurs' attack.
Tottenham's management seems to be biding their time, hoping that Brentford will feel the pressure to sell and lower Toney's price even more. This patient strategy might just work, allowing Spurs to nab Toney at the right price and significantly strengthen their squad for the upcoming season.
