A pundit has shared his opinion on reports suggesting that Tottenham will extend the contract of one of their stars.

Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly preparing to offer a contract extension to defender Cristian Romero, a move that could see him among the club's highest earners.

Former Tottenham goalkeeper Paul Robinson has expressed his support for the contract extension, emphasising the importance of retaining key players like Romero for the club’s success.

With his potential wage increase to approximately £200,000 per week, this new deal would reflect the defender's significant contributions to the team.

Robinson pointed out that while Romero may not be the most vocal presence on the pitch, he embodies grit and determination. His consistency and resilience have made him an integral figure in Tottenham's defence. Robinson noted:

"If you’re going to give a player a pay rise, you can’t do that without extending their contract, which is good news for Tottenham. He and Micky van de Ven have been key. To tie him down to a longer-term contract is only good news"

Since arriving from Atalanta in 2022 for a fee of €50 million, Romero has established himself as a cornerstone of Spurs’ backline.

His partnership with fellow defender Micky van de Ven has further enhanced the team’s defensive solidity under manager Ange Postecoglou.

The duo has been vital in solidifying Tottenham’s defensive structure, which has been a focus for the club in recent seasons.

Romero’s impressive performances have not gone unnoticed, attracting interest from major European clubs, including Real Madrid, earlier this summer.

However, Tottenham are determined to retain the 26-year-old as a central figure in their future plans. Currently, Romero’s contract runs until 2027, but an extension would solidify his place in the squad and align with the club's long-term vision.
