Productive international game for Tottenham duo
By Tom Vinall
Today marked the first day of competitive games during this September international break, and Spurs duo Dejan Kulusevski and Lucas Bergvall were in action for Sweden in their Nations League trip against Azerbaijan.
Kuluvevski was named in Jon Dahl Tomasson's starting XI, playing off the right in his 442 formations, making up an attack with Alexander Isak, Viktor Gyokeres, and Antony Elanga. The 24-year-old played the whole 90 minutes.
Sweden had to wait for a while for the opener, but they started flowing in once they did get off the mark. Three goals in a 15-minute second-half period was enough for the win, despite a consolation from their hosts eight minutes from time.
Bergvall was introduced to the action with around 18 minutes to go, replacing Alex Douglas, and just eight minutes later, Sweden got their third goal to secure three points.
Good day for Dejan Kulusevski and Lucas Bergvall with Sweden
Despite no goals or assists, it was a positive game from Kuluveksi, who recorded; six chances created, 3/3 long balls, one big chance created, and two tackles.
Manager Jon Dahl Tomasson is known for his high-octane, attacking style of play, which should suit both Bergvall and Kulusevski. It is similar to Ange's style of play, as Sweden recorded 30 shots and 61% possession in this game, whilst also giving up a fair few good chances to their hosts themselves, who had seven big chances in the game.
In this 442 setup, in a bit of a catch-22 situation, the direct competition for Bergvall to stake a claim for a place in the starting XI is Dejan Kulusevski himself. Quite similar to Heung Min-Son and Yang Min-Hyeok for the South Korea national team.
In any case, it was the perfect start for the two Spurs attackers and their Swedish counterparts. Next up is a home game against Estonia on Monday night, with kick-off being 19:45 BST, 14:45 ET.
