Journalist says Tottenham might delay move for £60m star until next transfer window
Tottenham Hotspur's interest in Crystal Palace's Eberechi Eze has resurfaced as a potential target for the January window. According to Sami Mokbel of The Daily Mail, Spurs seriously considered a move for the talented attacking midfielder earlier this summer, exploring the possibility of triggering his £60 million release clause.
Eze has been on the radar of several Premier League clubs, including Tottenham, who reportedly looked into securing his services before the window slams shut. However, with the release clause now expired and only hours remaining in the summer transfer window, it appears that Eze will remain at Selhurst Park for now.
Mokbel revealed that Tottenham wasn't alone in their pursuit of Eze, noting that several top-six clubs were also interested in the England international. Despite this widespread interest, no club was willing to take the plunge, primarily due to concerns over Eze's fitness. The midfielder has struggled with hamstring injuries over the past 18 months, which has made potential suitors hesitant to pay a significant fee. Mokbel explained:
"It would be accurate to say Tottenham had an interest in Eberechi Eze, that is accurate. But I know, the entire top six will have looked at Eze’s situation. Interestingly, and most important of all, none of those clubs took the plunge. I think part of the reason would have been the hamstring injuries he has struggled with over the last 18 months."
"I think clubs will look at that and say £60m is great value and he’s a fantastic player, but we need to see another season out of him, and then, let’s make that deal happen next summer."

Given these concerns, Tottenham may decide to revisit their interest in Eze during the January transfer window. By then, clubs will have a clearer picture of Eze's fitness and form, potentially making them more confident in making a move.
Moreover, Tottenham’s current squad situation could play a part in their January transfer decisions. The progress of youngsters like Lucas Bergvall and Wilson Odobert might either lessen or heighten the need for someone of Eze's quality.
Also, it is important to acknowledge that a lot can change between now and January. Tottenham's priorities may shift depending on the team's performance over the coming months, as well as the progress made by key players. Though Eze stays on their radar, Spurs will likely keep a close eye on how their squad shapes up before making any major decisions in the January window.
In contrast, club insider Paul O Keefe suggests that a new midfielder is unlikely to join the North London outfit before the summer window closes.
