Will Dominic Solanke make his Tottenham debut against Leicester City?
By Kian Long
Tottenham Hotspur are excited to embark on a new Premier League adventure. It is their second campaign under Ange Postecoglou and understandably, the excitement has only increased from the first. New signings Dominic Solanke, Lucas Bergvall and Archie Gray will be eager to make their mark in their first spell.
However, only the latter two were involved in pre-season for Tottenham Hotspur. Dominic Solanke was not involved in any pre-season match for Tottenham. This is understandable, considering he was signed just a day before the final pre-season match against Bayern Munich. It shouldn't be overlooked that Solanke did have a near-full pre-season with Bournemouth, though.
So, as we look ahead to the Premier League opener, will Dominic Solanke make his Tottenham debut against Leicester City?
Will Dominic Solanke make his Tottenham debut against Leicester City?
The immediate evidence is that Ange Postecoglou doesn't see why not. Speaking after pre-season and looking ahead to the new season, Ange Postecoglou hyped up Dominic Solanke's readiness and availability to start the opening game of the Premier League against Leicester City.
In his own words (via Football London), Postecoglou said: “Yeah, I don’t see any reason why he shouldn’t be [ready to start]. He’s played most of the preseason. Slight knock in the last game Bournemouth played, but, of course, we’ll have a look at him during, during the week. But I think that considering he’s done most of the pre-season, I see no reason why he wouldn’t be available."
It is usually customary that new signings are given time to gel with the players before they are handed their debut. However, Dominic Solanke is a different case. He was a necessary signing for Tottenham and he fills a position they are frankly depleted in. While Dejan Kulusevski played well as the nine in pre-season, using the Swedish attacker in this position is not sustainable long-term.
Solanke, though, is a killer in this position. He also understands the demands of the Premier League, outscoring every Tottenham player in the league last season. So, I see absolutely every reason why Solanke should be handed his Premier League debut for Tottenham on Monday evening.
