This Wednesday, Tottenham Hotspur have officially announced a new contract for Djed Spence, who has penned a deal until 2028 – his previous deal was until 2027.

Spence impressed in pre-season with a number of impressive performances and attacking contributions. Although he has found consistent gametime hard to come by so far this season, he has already made an impact with a crucial equaliser in the Carabao Cup tie away to Coventry City, when Spurs looked lost and were minutes away from being knocked out in just the third round.

Unfortunately for Spence, he was not included in the squad for the Europa League, where you cannot help but feel he would have already played some significant minutes. He has had some cameos off the bench in the Premier League, playing at left-back in the most part. He was able to get 45 minutes in the win at Old Trafford a few weeks ago after Destiny Udogie had to be withdrawn at half-time in that one.

In the official statement on the club website, Spurs have said: “We are delighted to announce that Djed Spence has signed a new contract with the Club, which will run until 2028.

Having joined the Club in July, 2022, from Middlesbrough, Djed has made 10 appearances in our colours to date and registered his first competitive goal for us last month in our victory against Coventry City in the Carabao Cup.

The 24-year-old has previously spent time on loan with Stade Rennais, Leeds United and most recently with Serie A side Genoa for the second half of the 2023/24 campaign.

On the international stage, Djed has featured for England at Under-21 level on six occasions after making his debut for the Young Lions in March, 2022.”

You would imagine that some assurances would have been made to Spence for him to extend his contract – which is encouraging.
