In the early hours of Wednesday morning BST, Cristian Romero was back in action for Argentina, having served his international suspension for his protests to the officials after the defeat to Colombia, when his side played out a 1-1 draw away to Venezuela towards the end of last week.

He is not the only Spurs player to serve an international ban, with Rodrigo Bentancur this break serving the final two games of his four game ban for his part in the aftermath of Uruguay’s Copa America semi final defeat - also to Colombia.

The Tottenham Hotspur number 17 was partnering Nicolas Otamendi of Benfica at the heart of the defence, the tried and trusted partnership that had won Argentina the 2021 Copa America and the 2022 World Cup – with Romero partnering Lisandro Martinez for the 2024 Copa America.

After 19 minutes, Argentina took the lead through no other than Lionel Messi. In the closing stages of the first half, La Albicleste scored two quickfire goals to go into the half-time break with a healthy 3-0 lead.

In the first half, Romero was already showing his best form, having 69 touches of the ball and completing 63/67 passes, as well as winning 4/5 of his duels.

He continued this in the second half, as Argentina scored another three goals to run out 6-0 winners. By the end of the game, Romero had recorded; 115 touches, 107/112 passes, one clearance, one interception, and one tackle, with another 90 minutes in the tank.

We will have to see if Romero is in the optimal physical condition for the game against West Ham United. It is the early kick off on Saturday, and Romero has a 14 hour flight to make after playing 90 minutes of football. The fact he was suspended for the game against Venezuela should help in this regard, but we will see.
