Morgan Rogers was the original dream transfer target on the left wing for Tottenham Hotspur, but the Lilywhites didn't even get a sniff of the Aston Villa star this past summer transfer window. Instead, their biggest London rivals Arsenal and Chelsea duked it out for the playmaker, with the Blues and Xabi Alonso secretly winning his signature as Todd Boehly sanctioned an earth shattering 117 million pound transfer for the player.
Meanwhile, Tottenham secured their own blockbuster left winger in Savio, inking the Manchester City star to another somewhat inflated fee of 85 million pounds. Savio's debut actually went really well, as the Brazilian international scored and created a goal for the Lilywhites in a 5-1 win over Charlton Athletic while coming off the bench. He hasn't been fit enough yet to follow that up, but there is a lot of optimism that he is the new face of the Tottenham attack.
The thing is, even though Rogers cost Chelsea more than 30 million pounds more than Savio, the 24 year old left winger/attacking midfielder is already sending Tottenham Hotspur a message that they missed out on a huge difference maker who can change games in the final score.
Morgan Rogers would have been a game-changer for Tottenham
After scoring an amazing opener against Arsenal last weekend that Chelsea failed to capitalize on as a team, Rogers turned the tide for his side in the League Cup against a credible Premier League opponent in Leeds United. Rogers came off the bench to pick up a trio of assists in the second half, one more big chance created that really should count as a fourth assist, and a total of four key passes as he dominated Leeds with his brain.
Morgan Rogers would have been such a great signing for Tottenham Hotspur with his ability to cut inside and score or playmake centrally, and when Spurs face Chelsea this season, he is going to be an absolute menace for their back line to deal with.
But for Tottenham now, Rogers's huge games for Chelsea are a real shot across the bow at Savio to respond in kind. Regardless of who cost more, Tottenham could have signed Rogers if they made a stronger effort to pry him from Aston Villa.
And so they need Savio to show that he is a superstar, too. He is expected to be ready to start for the first time against Everton, and now is as good of a time as ever to state his presence in the Premier League after a couple of quiet seasons at Manchester City.
