Lucas Bergvall entered the field in the 64th minute and broke a Swedish record by doing so. The Tottenham midfielder is now the youngest Swedish player to play in the world tournament as he marks another rise of one of Sweden’s brightest football talents.

The midfielder, born on 2 February 2006, broke the previous record held by Jesper Blomqvist, who made his World Cup debut for Sweden at the 1994 tournament. Bergvall surpassed that mark by just two days when he featured in Sweden’s opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

After the nation's horrid time in World Cup qualifying and only earning a place in the play-offs through the Nations League, Graham Potter has guided Sweden to an impressive opening win over Tunisia to become top of the group, with a healthy goal difference. Something that could be an advantage when going up against Netherlands and Japan in the remaining matchdays.

The 5-1 victory and Bergvall’s appearance is seen as a symbol of a new generation for Swedish football. Rather than being overwhelmed by the occasion, he showed confidence on the world stage and even contributed with an assist during Sweden’s impressive victory over Tunisia. His historic debut suggests that he could play a key role for Sweden for many years to come.

The achievement highlights Bergvall’s rapid development over recent years. After impressing in Swedish football with Djurgårdens IF, he earned a move to Tottenham Hotspur, where his maturity, technical ability, and composure quickly attracted attention. His performances at club level helped him secure a place in Sweden’s World Cup squad despite being only 20 years old.

Big season for the Swede

Bergvall will need a strong season at Tottenham, and Roberto De Zerbi is likely to place greater trust in the young midfielder if he can stay fit and help Spurs avoid another battle near the bottom of the table.

The Swede started De Zerbi’s first match in charge against Sunderland, but he was unable to establish a regular place in the side. As the season reached its decisive stages, the Italian opted for the experience of Rodrigo Bentancur and Joao Palhinha in midfield, leaving Bergvall unused on the bench for the final two matches as Spurs secured their Premier League status on the last day of the campaign.

However, Bergvall remains one of the club’s brightest young prospects. Alongside Archie Gray, he will hope Tottenham continue to invest in youth rather than relying solely on experience. During his two years at the club, Bergvall has demonstrated maturity beyond his years, as well as the technical quality and energy that make him a valuable option in midfield, something that Premier League rivals and Champions League rivals have been enquiring about.

If he can build on those performances and earn De Zerbi’s confidence, he could play a much bigger role in Tottenham’s future.
