By the end of the season, Tottenham Hotspur relegated one of their most talented players to the bench, as both Igor Tudor and Roberto De Zerbi had trouble finding a way to place Swedish national team standout Lucas Bergvall into the best XI.

De Zerbi managed to skate Spurs to Premier League safety in the relegation fight by leaning on veteran players Rodrigo Bentancur, Conor Gallagher, and Joao Palhinha in the middle of the park with Bergvall a mere footnote in the squad.

Unlike Archie Gray, though, Bergvall really did earn his benching on the pitch. Whereas he was a real X-Factor for Spurs in the 2024/25 season and helped the club win the Europa League title, that same spark was sorely missing from the Swede in 2025/26. Thomas Frank played him out of position, but even as a No. 8 in his most comfortable role, Bergvall still left something to be desired.

Lucas Bergvall is in a tough spot

Just 20 years old, Lucas Bergvall has so much to give to Tottenham Hotspur, but he was honestly one of the most disappointing players of the 2025/26 season in terms of where he finished compared to expectations. He, Randal Kolo Muani, and Destiny Udogie all hurt their stocks this season, and as much as Udogie and Bergvall are liked, they didn't live up to their talent.

Tottenham have to look at their needs in midfield, the number of players they have, and where they have to get better in possession, and Bergvall may be the odd man out. He really hasn't been a starting level player, but he is too young and too talented to simply leave on the bench.

Yes, Tottenham are going to have to seriously consider loaning out Bergvall to another club, even if it burns them for one season, because Bergvall needs to play and Spurs can't wait for the inconsistencies with their U21 talent to iron out before then.

It will not be a popular decision among the fans to loan Bergvall out by any means, and they may regret it even for only one season if Bergvall blows up like Luka Vuskovic. But to be honest, having watched Bergvall in the second half of the 2025/26 season, the bigger regret Spurs will have is another wasted year for Bergvall than anything else. He needs to be starting every game in a different environment, and it does not appear that Roberto De Zerbi himself thinks Lucas B is ready either.
