Legendary striker reveals that he is a Spurs fan

Not the words you were expecting to hear

On Monday night, the ballon d'or awards ceremony was held in Paris - with Rodri of Manchester City being the winner. There were plenty of recognizable faces at the awards, including a number of former footballers.

One of those people was George Weah, who remains to this day, the only African player to win the award, when he did so in 1995. During the ceremony, Weah was asked "Any particular player that impressed you?"

To which, he responded "Yeah, that's one of my players I love. I'm a fan of Mr Kane. When he was playing for my team . My friend. Very good friend, because I believe that he's a very strong and clever striker. And I support the team of Tottenham since I was a kid, and then, I love him."

Quite the co-sign for Kane to get, with Weah being such a legendary player himself. Quite a pity that he never ended up playing for Spurs, with his brief career in the Premier League being at Chelsea and Manchester City.

Kane ended up finishing 10th in the voting for the ballon d'or, and was awarded the Gerd Muller trophy, along with Kylian Mbappe, for being the highest goalscorers for club and country last season, with 52 goals each.

It is safe to say that the former Spurs striker was in a far better mood than a current Spurs striker, Richarlison, who has not hid his displeasure at his international team mate Vinicius Jr coming second in the award.

The striker said on Instagram "Unfortunately, based on criteria that no one understands, you didn't win this award. Rodri is an excellent player who deserves to be among the best. But the fact that Vini didn't win the Ballon d'Or: it's shameful. Football lost today."

Safe to say, this isn't going down well with Spurs fans. One day after an embarrassing, humiliating defeat at Crystal Palace, and a player, who came on and did absolutely nothing, is on social media, ranting and raving about the ballon d'or. The phrase "read the room" feels extremely prominent here.

There has been similar frustration levelled at James Maddison, who took to social media to mention how he has now played 200 games in the Premier League. At least that is somewhat to do with the club, given a chunk of those have been in Lilywhite, even if also a bit tone deaf.
