Jamie Carragher calls for a change to Spurs hierarchy
By Tom Vinall
The level of scrutiny towards Daniel Levy and ENIC appears to have gone up a level over the last few days, with the humiliating defeat at home to Chelsea really the straw that broke the camels back for some. It is surprising that for some there was not this level of noise before this game, but it really does appear to have truly waken up the remaining people.
There has not just been internal frustration, but also external. On Sunday, Jamie Carragher, who had co-commentated on the game, was on punditry afterwards, and expressed his resentment towards the owners of Spurs.
Jamie Carragher calls out Daniel Levy's lack of ambition
The former Liverpool defender said: “It’s probably time for somebody else to come in [as owners of the club]. To not win a trophy in that period of time, with the managers they’ve had, they’ve never really gone out of their way in the transfer market. They’ve spent decent money without blowing other teams out of the water. The wage bills always one of the smallest, and you’re never going to get the best players [with such a low wage bill].
It might be a time [to leave] for actually, Daniel Levy, who I’ve been a supporter of, cause you look at the actual work he’s done – but now that works done, in terms of a stadium and a training ground, someone else needs to be in charge of this football club.
This is not the first, nor second, time that Carragher has called out a lack of ambition from Spurs, either. Back in 2018, also on Sky Sports, he said: “The job he’s [Pochettino] done is unbelievable. The money spent, the points is another one. [Let’s take a look at] the money spent, what we’re looking at [Spurs spending from 2014-2018].
To get Tottenham into the top four, consistently, to overachieve [their] budget. We’re talking about spend here, net spend, compared to others [top six teams]. Tottenham, in five, ten years time, this team will break up, the manager will leave – and nobody will be going back and looking at net spend, and points, and what they did. They’ll just say ‘did they win anything?’
And at this moment, it’s probably looking like the answer is going to be no, whenever this ends, this group of players, and this manager. No way should that manager, and those players get that thrown at them. If anybody is going to get it thrown at them, why this team didn’t win anything, it will be Daniel Levy and the board, at Tottenham.
Because a net spend of £29 million is not acceptable, for one of the biggest clubs in the country. Teams that come up and get promoted have a bigger net spend than that. The fact Tottenham are where they are, is because of that man there {Poch], and those players.
Now, Daniel Levy has done a great job in terms of training ground, infrastructure, stadium. But you’ve got the best Tottenham team, and manager, that you’ve had for 30 years, and that is not enough if you want them to actually win something."

It is good to see someone from the external footballing world, with such a big platform, calling out the owners. Everything he said in 2018 came true. In fact, it all came tumbling down quicker than he even expected it to.
People can say Ange has won one game out of seven. Daniel Levy has won one trophy in 23 years. Quite a big difference in the numbers there, wouldn’t you say. Even Cristian Romero, an active player, has called the club out for their ambition, or lack there of.
