Tottenham Hotspur have been blowing some smoke to their fans over the past couple of months about how they are going to push harder to compete for Premier League and Champions League titles now that they have hired Thomas Frank, moved on from Daniel Levy, and made a couple of notable young attacking transfers in the summer 2025 window between Mohammed Kudus and Xavi Simons.
Overall, there is some reason to believe that Tottenham have turned over a new leaf as an organization heading into the January transfer window, but veteran Spurs supporters know better than to be fooled by cheap talk from this even cheaper club's management. But there are positive signs, so the January transfer window will be a great barometer of what to expect from them now.
The early signs from the transfer insiders are, at least, encouraging, and The Athletic's top reporter David Ornstein had some encouraging words for Tottenham fans to listen to on The Athletic FC Podcast, via The Spurs Express, “The sounds coming from around Spurs is that they’re ready to do something in January to bolster that squad further.”
Tottenham must have other targets
Although it's a vague report in some sense, it is a hugely positive one, especially since Ornstein spoke directly about the Antoine Semenyo transfer battle in this episode. The Semenyo race is the hottest topic in the Premier League heading into the holiday season, and the elite Bournemouth winger is undoubtedly at or near the top of the transfer wishlist for most Spurs supporters.
And Ornstein, in that very same episode, stated that Tottenham are right there with Manchester City and Liverpool as the three elite Premier League clubs with the most concrete chances at signing the young Cherries standout.
Now, Semenyo can't be the only top player Tottenham are after if they are to have a big January transfer window, as there is also no guarantee Kudus ends up with his even more productive Ghana national teammate.
So if Ornstein is predicting a big transfer window ahead for Tottenham, then, surely, there must be other top attacking targets they are after to bring more goals to a team that isn't finishing off chances enough - or creating them, really, besides Kudus. Tottenham fans should stay glued for more news from transfer insiders like Ornstein on more concrete targets besides Semenyo, but, right now, he is a huge fish they are legitimately in the race for.
