Tottenham Hotspur need to be one of the most active teams in the January transfer window, at least when it comes to signing a high impact player to improve the front line. Although Spurs have multiple options on the wings and at striker, they are lacking a sure fire superstar at the 9 or at striker.
Whereas Dominic Solanke or Randal Kolo Muani could potentially provide Spurs a semi decent striker option, Tottenham have little going for them on the left wing besides the young duo of Wilson Odobert and Mathys Tel, who are too unproven to be forced into such an important role.
The favorite of the fans at left wing is Antoine Semenyo, who is the best player in the Premier League legitimately available for a transfer this winter, owing to a 65 million pound release clause. Now, there is no guarantee Semenyo leaves Bournemouth due to his importance to the underdog's hopes of European qualification, but if there is even a chance at signing him, Spurs have to take it.
Liverpool just might be the favorites
However, Spurs face tough odds. Semenyo is a lifelong Arsenal fan, Manchester United are pushing hard after him, and now it seems like Liverpool have moved ahead of Tottenham and the others as the favorites to sign the Ghanaian international.
According to a report from TEAMtalk's Fraser Fletcher, sources close to the transfer talks state that Liverpool are "ready to meet" the 65 million pound release clause for Semenyo this winter and are said to be "primed" to win the transfer race. Even though they have spent big on the attack this past summer with players like Alexander Isak, Hugo Ekitike, and Florian Wirtz, they view Semenyo as a key player to sign, especially since he could be their heir to Mohamed Salah.
Liverpool have proven that they can land the elite targets they want, so with Semenyo on a release clause, they are a major threat to Tottenham here. Spurs haven't been as successful as Liverpool recently, and while they can offer him a more important role and playing time every week across from countryman Mohammed Kudus on the right wing,
TEAMtalk go on to state that Tottenham aren't giving up in light of Liverpool's strong interest and status as favorites to land Semenyo, and while that is great to hear, Spurs have a lot of work to do before they can prove to their fans that they are able to beat the elite of the Premier League to transfers consistently.
