Conor Gallagher transfer somehow looks like an even bigger blunder now

At the time of his signing, many pundits in the English media were praising Tottenham Hotspur for bringing in Conor Gallagher from Atletico Madrid, even though they had broken their wage structure to sign him (of all players to break a wage structure for) and overpaid Aston Villa at the last second to sign him for 40 million euros.

Atletico Madrid had been trying to get rid of Gallagher for more than a year to no avail, and there came Tottenham to swoop in. Gallagher was nothing short of shocking for the majority of the season, looking like a monumental transfer bust. But then Roberto De Zerbi came in to save both Spurs and Gallagher, somehow getting the England international, whom he immediately praised upon his arrival, to be an important starter in their Premier League survival.

De Zerbi's ability to get competent play out of Gallagher got most people to quiet on Gallagher or even praise him, but there are a lot of Spurs fans who live in a world of roses and optimism. And the reality is that Gallagher was a waste of 40 million euros, has no business starting for a team that wants to finish in the top five of the Premier League, and has now, worse yet, played a role in costing them a young gem.

Conor Gallagher cost Tottenham a future star

Lucas Bergvall has just handed a fresh transfer request to Tottenham Hotspur, wanting to seek a new challenge. Nevermind that it is a bit pathetic for a player to request a transfer after his team got crushed in the World Cup and while he has played poorly for both club and country. And nevermind that Bergvall is apparently giving up on Spurs before even getting to actually fully work with his new manager.

Part of the problem is that Bergvall sees all the glut of midfielders Tottenham have added who are worse than him but are going to play anyway because nobody else wants to pay for them and believes that he is stuck in the wrong place.

From the moment Tottenham signed Conor Gallagher, anyone could tell that it was going to be a confilict for Lucas Bergvall, given the two are box to box midfielders with similar roles in the lineup. De Zerbi understandably picked the more experienced player with survival on the line, and while that does not necessarily mean he will unwisely turn to Gallagher again, the fact that Gallagher is there at all and coveted by De Zerbi is a huge turn off and yet another sign that maybe Gallagher was not such a wise signing after all. And it is hard to truly credit him for Premier League survival when many others like Joao Palhinha, Antonin Kinsky, and Rodrigo Bentancur played bigger roles.
