Tottenham Hotspur are facing a challenging chapter in their Premier League campaign as injuries to key defenders pile up, leaving the team vulnerable at the back.

Their 4-3 defeat to Chelsea not only highlighted defensive frailties but also compounded their woes with the loss of both Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven to injuries.

Romero, a stalwart in Spurs' backline, suffered a quad injury early in the match, with reports from Argentina suggesting he could be sidelined for up to six weeks.

Meanwhile, van de Ven, who had recently returned from a hamstring issue, was forced off late in the game, leaving Tottenham’s defensive setup in tatters. For a team that has relied heavily on these two players, the timing couldn’t be worse.

The injuries leave Ange Postecoglou with limited options as he looks to steady the ship during a demanding part of the season.

With no immediate solutions in sight, the Australian manager is turning to creativity and youth to navigate this challenging period.

Speaking to Football London, Postecoglou acknowledged the gravity of the situation but expressed confidence in the versatility of young players like Archie Gray.

The 18-year-old has shown promise across various defensive roles, including right-back, left-back, and centre-back during pre-season games.

“Yeah, I have to get creative. I think Archie’s probably the one for us at the moment that we need to try and get to fill in there. Postecoglou admitted.

“He’s done right back, left back for us. Had to play at centre-back a little bit this year, he did during the pre-season. With him and Radu, they’re the two main sort of defenders," Postecoglou admitted.

“We’ve still got five or six games to navigate, so we may have to get creative at some point and deal with it in a different way.”

This approach underscores Postecoglou’s willingness to adapt and trust younger squad members during challenging times.

Young talents to the rescue

It’s a bold move, but one that could pay dividends as Spurs look to maintain competitiveness across multiple competitions.

The defensive crisis places added pressure on an already demanding season, but it also offers an opportunity for young players to step up and prove their worth.

With several games remaining before the January transfer window, Postecoglou’s ability to innovate and inspire his squad will be crucial.

Whether this creative approach can stabilise Tottenham’s defence and keep their ambitions alive remains to be seen.
